The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.
Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve
The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job
The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs created to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.
The figure of positions created to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline
Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise
Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
